Hearing them

Field note by kensaurus · Published · Updated

They said they were hurt. You explained why you were right. Somehow that made it worse — even though your facts were fine.

The pattern

Empathy is showing you got their side before you defend yours. Reflect the feeling at their volume (don't inflate "annoyed" into "enraged"). Validate that it makes sense from where they stand. Then — and only then — problem-solve. Fix-it mode too early reads as "your feelings are a bug."

In the research

Rogers put it plainly: reflect the feeling first. People calm when they feel understood — before you defend the facts.

Where it breaks

Validation isn't agreement. You can get their feeling and still disagree on the facts. Also: endless reflecting with zero ownership just stalls the real apology.
