# How fights actually start

> The dishes were the topic. Within sixty seconds you were both arguing about who never listens, who always does this, and whether anyone even cares. The sink never stood a chance.

## Pattern

How you open predicts how the fight goes. A soft start names a specific moment + your feeling + a clear ask. A harsh start piles on blame, contempt, or "you always." The classic wrecking crew: blame-listing, eye-rolls/contempt, defensiveness, and shutting down.

## Cite

Gottman observational research finds that how a conflict starts strongly predicts how it ends — harsh openers escalate; a soft start leaves room to repair.

## Spot it

- "You ALWAYS leave me hanging." (blame-listing)
- "Wow, cool story — must be nice to be useless." (contempt)
- "That's not what I said — you're the problem." (defensiveness)
- Silent stare / walking out with no return plan (shutting down)

## Try this

- "When the dishes sat overnight after we agreed, I felt dumped on. Can we do them together now?"
- One issue at a time — park the greatest-hits tour for later.
- If your voice is already hot: "I'm wound up. Give me ten minutes, then I want to try again."
- Swap "you never" for one concrete when: "When you cancelled at 6…"

## Where it breaks

A soft start isn't a magic spell. If someone is contemptuous on purpose, you need boundaries, not better phrasing. And stuffing anger forever isn't "soft" — it's a delayed explosion.
